Information Face of Africa Germany receives about User
Face of Africa Germany (“FOAG”) receives various types of information about User, including: (i) the information that is required when User registers to utilize the Site, and (ii) the information that User posts on FOAG (including Content posted by User).
Information such as User’s date of birth allows FOAG to display User age-appropriate content and advertisements and to comply with laws such as the Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
FOAG receives data (or metadata such as time, date and User location) about User whenever User interacts with the Site (such as when User comments, clicks “favorite” to Content, votes on Content, shares Content or otherwise interacts with Content). FOAG receives data from the computer, mobile phone or other device User utilizes to access FOAG, including when multiple users log in from the same device. This may include User’s IP address, User’s internet service, location, the type of browser User utilizes (including identifiers) or the pages of the Site that User visits.
FOAG obtains data from FOAG’s advertising partners, customers and other third parties that help FOAG (or those parties) deliver ads, understand online activity, and generally improve the User experience on the Site. For example, an advertiser may tell FOAG information about User (like how User responded to an ad) in order to measure the effectiveness of and improve the quality of ads.
FOAG may put together User’s current city with GPS and other location information FOAG has about User to, for example, tell User’s and User’s friends about people or events nearby, or offer deals to User that User might be interested in. FOAG may also compile data about User to serve User ads that might be more relevant to User.
When FOAG obtains User’s GPS location (through the FOAG’s identification of User’s location through User’s IP address or based on User’s data entry of User’s location), FOAG compiles it with other location information FOAG has about User (like User’s current city) and places such data on a map so that users of the Site can visualize the proximity to other users. FOAG does not provide User’s name or any other personally identifying information about User to FOAG’s advertisers.
How FOAG uses that information
FOAG uses the information that FOAG receives about User in connection with the services and features FOAG provides to User, other users, FOAG’s partners and the advertisers that purchase ads on the site. For example, FOAG may use the information FOAG receive about User: (i) as part of FOAG’s efforts to keep products and services safe and secure; (ii) to protect FOAG’s or others’ rights or property; (iii) to provide User with location features and services, such as informing User when an event is occurring nearby to User; (iv) to measure or understand the effectiveness of ads User sees; (v) for internal operations, including troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research and service improvement.
Granting FOAG this permission allows FOAG to provide User with improved features and services in the future that use the information FOAG receive about User in new ways. While User is allowing FOAG to use the information FOAG receive about User, User ownsall of User’s information at all times.
FOAG stores data for as long as it is necessary to provide products and services to User and others (including those parties described above). Typically, information associated with User’s account will be maintained by FOAG until User’s account is deleted. For certain categories of data, FOAG may also inform User about specific data retention practices.
Deleting and deactivating User’s account
If User desires to stop utilizing User’s account, User may either deactivate the account or delete the account. Deactivating User’s account puts User’s account “on hold” (but FOAG does not delete any of User’s information when deactivated). When User deletes User’s account, information may remain in FOAG’s backup copies and logs. User should only delete User’s account if User is certain that User never wants to reactivate it.
FOAG does not share any of User’s information with advertisers without User’s permission. As described in this policy, FOAG may share User’s information when FOAG has removed from such information, data that personally identifies User (or if FOAG combined it with other information so that it no longer personally identifies User). FOAG use the information FOAG receives from User to deliver ads and to make them more relevant to User (including activities that User conducts on the Site). When an advertiser creates an ad, they may be given the opportunity to choose their audience by location, demographics, likes, keywords, and any other information FOAG receives or that FOAG may tell determine about User and other users. FOAG does not tell advertisers who saw or clicked on their ads.
Advertisers sometimes place cookies on User’s computer in order to make their ads more effective. Sometimes FOAG allow advertisers to target a category of users. FOAG does this by bundling characteristics that FOAG believe are related to the category.
Cookies, pixels and other system technologies
Cookies are small pieces of data that are stored on User’s computer, mobile phone or other device. Pixels are small blocks of code on FOAG pages that, among other things, allow another server to measure viewing of an FOAG page and often are used in connection with cookies. FOAG uses technologies such as cookies, pixels, and local storage (on User’s browser or device, which is similar to a cookie but holds more information) to provide and understand a range of products and services.
FOAG use these technologies to, among other things:
- make FOAG easier or faster to use;
- enable features and store information about User (including on User’s device or in User’s browser cache) and User’s use of FOAG;
- deliver, understand and improve advertising;
- monitor and understand the use of FOAG’s products and services;
- to protect User, others and FOAG.
For example, FOAG may use them to know User is logged in to FOAG, to help User use social plugins and share buttons, or to know when User is interacting with FOAG’s advertising or Platform partners. FOAG may ask advertisers or other partners to serve ads or services to computers, mobile phones or other devices, which may use a cookie, pixel or other similar technology placed by FOAG or the third party (although FOAG would not share any other information that identifies User with an advertiser).
User can remove or block cookies or other similar technologies or block or remove other data stored on User’s computer or device (such as by using the various settings in User’s browser), but it may affect User’s ability to use FOAG.
